【當年今日】Thomas Demand 用雕塑攝影「演繹」戴安娜王妃之死

1997年8月31日零時23分，一架載有戴安娜王妃的汽車在巴黎阿爾瑪橋（Pont de l'Alma）行車隧道的入口失控撞向石牆，戴安娜經搶救後證實不治，終年36歲。阿爾瑪橋原本只是巴黎塞納河的眾多橋樑之一，卻因這件交通意外獲得全球的關注，1999年，德國藝術家Thomas Demand以此為靈感，創作出影片作品《Tunnel》。

現年57歲的Thomas Demand原本是一名雕塑家，由於當時他居住的地方很小，沒有足夠空間擺放作品，所以每次他創作完小型雕塑後就會扔掉。後來老師建議他用攝影的方法記錄雕塑作品，於是他在1990年代初轉向攝影，拍攝紙製的模型。之後，他從個人的經驗延伸至集體回憶，作品大多取材自社會或歷史事件，包括著名歌手Whitney Houston的最後晚餐、戴安娜王妃的事故現場等，參考廣為流傳的照片或影片，再利用紙造的模型還原事件發生的場景，然後拍攝成照片。

影像向來被認為是傳遞真相的方法，當這些模型重現「真實」的畫面時，攝影的真實意義是否也會因而消失？Thomas Demand的雕塑攝影模糊了真實與真相之間的界限，他意識到攝影不僅僅是真相的記錄或還原，拍攝的過程比拍攝的對象更重要，因此在完成作品後，他一如既往會扔掉創作的模型。由於獨特的手法，他的作品獲得廣泛關注，2005年在紐約現代藝術博物館（MoMA）舉辦回顧展。

説回《Tunnel》，這是Thomas Demand的首個影片作品，當時他在工作室製作一條隧道， 巧妙地利用燈光效果模仿跟蹤鏡頭在隧道快速穿梭的畫面，以模仿當年狗仔隊追車的氣氛。他製作的紙板模型，並非對死亡事件的忠實再現，某些細節會被更改，畢竟每個人對於同一事件或影像的重建不盡一致。觀眾或會想起從媒體上看過這些畫面，感覺似曾相識，從而勾起對這件事情的回憶，而不同人腦海中的細節，也可能是不一樣的。 

On August 31, 1997, Princess Diana's car crashed into Paris's Pont de l'Alma tunnel. Diana was certified dead after being rescued. The ordinary bridge soon gained global attention because of the traffic accident. Inspired by this tragedy, German artist Thomas Demand created "Tunnel" in 1999.

Thomas Demand is often drawn inspiration from social or historical events, referring to widely circulated photos or videos and then using paper models to restore the scene of the event and presented with pictures. "Tunnel" is his first film work. He created the mock-up tunnel in his studio and cleverly used lighting effects to imitate a fast-paced tracking camera scene in the tunnel to replicate how the paparazzi were chasing cars.

The cardboard model is not a faithful reproduction of the accident but a perfectly constructed model world. The viewers seem to remember seeing these images from the media and feel familiar with them, bringing back memories of the car crash. The artwork also draws our attention to collective memory, reflecting our relationship to images from the mass media.
