書評:《Conversations with Friends 聊天紀錄》- Sally Rooney
📝Review: I’d say this book is my top favorite among the 3 novels written by Sally Rooney. It details the coming-of-age struggles that college students face in the area of study, career, as well as interpersonal relationships. It’s the key period of life when you start making serious decisions responsible for yourself while trying to break the unwritten rules of the society and making an effort to defy the expectations of people around you. Tangled love, obscure path, afflicted family… everything comes together to mess with you and you must figure out a way to live with them and to sort out what kind of person you wish to become all in just one or two years of time.
Though the story focuses more on the relationship between the characters, the narrative of Frances is so reflective and finely written that it makes you take a look at every aspect of your life. Her honest conversations with Mellisa and Nick by the end of the book are some unexpected remedies to me. There are things that you did not do or did not say which keep you being regretful for a long time but Sally Rooney’s words help you reconcile with yourself. That is the magic and power of her and the reason why she is one of my favorite authors now.
🔖 Quotes:
🔖 I was starting to feel adrift from the whole setup, like the dynamic that had eventually revealed itself didn’t interest me, or even involve me. I could have tried harder to engage myself, but I probably resented having to make an effort to be noticed.
🔖My ego had always been an issue. I knew that intellectual attainment was morally neutral at best, but when bad things happened to me I made myself feel better by thinking about how smart I was.
🔖 Capitalism harnesses “love” for profit.
🔖 I watched him standing there, not blinking, his expression calm and fathomless like an ocean. We didn’t have to speak then.
